On 27 March 2019, I was delighted to be invited by the Bangladesh High Commission to join the diplomatic and political celebrations of the Independence and National Day of Bangladesh.

The event was hosted at the International Maritime Organisation HQ, London.

I was joined by Conservative Peer, Baroness Anne Jenkin and Bangladesh Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, MD Shahriar Alam, member of Parliament. H.E. Saida Muna Tasneem invited key dignitaries and the senior leadership team from the Conservative Friends of Bangladesh.

The occasion marked the 48 anniversary of Independence of Bangladesh.

Discussions were held on the historical significance, the war of Liberation in 1971 and the relations between Bangladesh and the UK which progressed and strengthened when Prime Minister, Edward Heath extended his support to the people of Bangladesh. It was great to see the enduring relationship, in 2021, we will be noting and celebrating the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh-UK diplomatic relations, strong bonds and friendship which exist between the Commonwealth countries.
