  • Women Driving Political Change

Friday, 28 January 2011

200 guests appeared at the Conservative Policy Forum (CPF) launch on 27th January 2011. Some impressed with the enthusiasm expressed by the recently elected CPF council.  Speakers included the Rt Hon Oliver Letwin M and Party Chairman – The Rt Hon Baroness Sayeeda Warsi supported by local coordinators, MEP's and MP's.

Despite winter weather, the team arrived hopeful to share their structures and success to date, to revitalize CPF.

However overwhelmed by the questions from the floor on new membership, newsletters and how effective will policy influence be formulated at such a local level by the whispering crowds?

I did have some empathy for the supporting activists and loyalists who were engaged but baffled with the level of actions that can be effectively implemented. The notion and perceptions of the lack of communication from CCHQ.

It was more than shaping new conservative policy rather than engaging with the voluntary party; for Warsi there were further challenges, a coalition and how power can be reinforced at the upcoming new local elections in May.

Any vital support infrastructures will need to be in place for proactive support to new volunteers and members, ensuring we govern as a party.

I was pleased to see Fiona Hodgson and Natalie Elphicke on the council. It is important to have women interests demonstrated and future papers on Big Society and Alternative Vote which will have an impact on women, participation and representation.

I hope they can bring many matters to light whilst reviewing the local matters and bringing attention to the heart of Ministers and Government. Fiona also has a wealth of experience from her national previous role in CWO.

Warsi was succinct and realistic with the achievements whilst taking view points of supporters along the new journey the Conservative Party have done since the eight months in Government.

The criticism, fury and banter came from a minority association chairs frustrated with not knowing more did not deter the positive well wishers who simply want to influence and participate from grass roots level.

I hope the discussion platform and CPF is here to stay on my journey with the Conservative family for the present and future.
